Edmonton Studio Maternity & Newborn Photography {Baby Sawyer}

Christmas and outdoor winter minis are done for the year and it’s hard to believe we are inching so close to 2022. I still have a couple openings available for 2021 babies still to arrive, otherwise I am looking forward to a relaxing holiday season with my family. If you are looking to take advantage of some savings this Black Friday, be sure to check my Instagram and Facebook page for my one day only Black Friday specials…psst you can save $100 right now though on any newborn package and also lock in 2021 pricing. I know that there will be so many small businesses offering amazing deals, so I thank you so much in advance if you choose to support my small business. Don’t forget when you shop local you are supporting families in your community. There are big changes coming in 2022 which I can’t wait to share, but which I can tell you will include some pricing changes, so book now to take advantage of this year's packages. My plans for 2022 aren’t just to raise prices, but to offer my wonderful clients the most amazing experience possible from flexible packages, beautiful exclusive printed products, and hopefully a brand new space - more details to come soon!

Now that everything has slowed down a bit I can finally get caught up and share some of my favorite newborn and family sessions of 2021. I am so grateful to all of the families who trusted me to capture this fleeting time for their family even as we continued to live with COVID. Now that I am fully vaccinated and the majority of Albertans are I can’t wait to get back to normal, even if normal means I will always wear a mask when I safely photograph your family. I met this lovely couple for the first time on a beautiful summer night and Sandra looked absolutely stunning in her floral dress and a couple pieces from my maternity wardrobe. I will sure miss the long summer nights when we could go to a couple different locations and not worry about losing the sun. Devon is my hometown and we are sure lucky to have so many gorgeous locations a short drive away, including one of the best spots along the North Saskatchewan River.

A few short weeks later this couple was now a family of three and they brought sweet little Sawyer to my studio for his newborn photos. I have noticed most babies I have photographed during COVID times have been feistier than usual, so when this little man arrived so sleepy and chill I thanked my lucky stars and did a session flow of my dreams. Studio sessions usually start with “mug shots” of baby, and detail shots, even when babies are awake I can still usually get some of my client’s favorite shots. Those shots will usually tire baby out and we will move into parent shots - which as you will see started with the sweetest little grin. I always try and pose baby in bucket but it’s not always comfortable for baby and I never force them into it, but again this was my lucky day and we got one of my favorite bucket shots ever which I now have printed in my studio. Have I mentioned yet that this family booked my first year package? So on top of maternity and newborn photos I will also photograph baby Sawyer when he is sitting (usually 6-9 months) and again just before his first birthday. Then on his birthday I will deliver his first year album featuring the best photos of his first year. Such a perfect way to create a heirloom keepsake for your baby. I can’t wait to see how much he’s grown the next time I see him, baby’s first year is so fleeting. Sandra and Larry thank you so much for choosing me to capture your beautiful family, I look forward to seeing you and baby Sawyer again soon and wish you all the best.

Edmonton Newborn Photography {Workshop learning with Dewdrops Photography}

Hello friends. It has sure has been awhile. The past 20 months of being open, then closed, then open again made time for me to start comparing myself too much to others and lose some of the passion I had for photography. I started to think my business would never recover and my goals that I had set for 2020 and never attained would also never be met.

Fortunately, I have the most amazing and supportive family and also the most giving clients who returned to me as soon as it was safe to do so. I started meeting new families again and I am happy and relieved to say that my photography business is finally up and running at the same capacity it was before COVID. 2022 is going to be a big year and I can’t wait to share more details with you all soon about the the exciting changes that will help me grow my photography business to a place I always dreamed of.

Back in early 2020 I had plans to grow the newborn and maternity photography side of my business to a higher level. I have always taken any opportunity to learn how to be a better newborn photographer and in March 2020, right before the world shut down, I was lucky to attend a workshop with Kelly Brown, a wonderful and talented photographer from Australia and known world wide. I left that workshop with so many goals and so much confidence, only for everything to close. Weeks stretched to months without any babies to photograph, and my Stand in Baby really helped, it just wasn’t enough.

Fast forward to 2021 and I started photographing babies again but definitely felt a little rusty. Every year I also take part in the Milky Way Newborn Retreat, an online retreat, and the 2021 retreat was just what I needed to get going again. I started offering studio maternity sessions for the first time, and was blown away with the response and amount of bookings. But I needed a bit more of a push to bring myself to the level I needed to be to offer the best newborn photography experience to my clients and grow as a professional photographer.

I have been a fan of Amy McDaniel | Dewdrops Photography for several years and after learning online from her for many of those years I always dreamed of training with her in person. Luckily those plans came into fruition early this year and in October 2021, just after my 30…something birthday, I got on a plane to rainy Seattle and drove to Olympia, WA to attend a 2:1 two day newborn photography workshop.

To say the experience was incredible would be an understatement. Watching Amy pose babies on day one I couldn’t believe the care and patience she took to pose each baby (we had 4 little ones that day). I got so much from just observing her up close, watching her pay attention to every detail and move baby between poses effortlessly and with so much confidence. Here are a few of the baby’s I was lucky to capture on the first day.

We were sure blessed to have such beautiful and sleepy babies to photograph. I couldn’t wait to get back to my hotel that night and edit some of the best newborn photos I think I’ve ever captured. That night though I also had to prepare for day 2 - the day I would pose the babies with one of my photography idols over my shoulder. What was instilled in me the first day though gave me confidence I never had before and I couldn’t wait.

And what a day 2 it was! We had two gorgeous babies, one sweet little one returning for the second day. I am so grateful to the parents of these little babes who gave me this amazing opportunity to learn. I posed baby in all the new poses I want to add to my session flow in 2022 and with Amy’s gentle guidance I attempted poses I had always admired but never had done before. I had the most patient little man first and was able to pose him exactly like I wanted to with such ease. Little Kelani was a bit more of a struggle, but just like in the real world no baby is alike and some just require a little more patience. Here are the images of the baby’s I posed and photographed on day two of the workshop.

Miss Amy I cannot thank you enough. You have provided me with the confidence to grow my newborn photography business to the level I always dreamed of. Training with you was a dream come true and was everything and more than I expected it to be. Special thanks to Sandi, a newborn photographer from California, who was a pleasure to train with.

When you book a newborn session with me you can rest assured that I will provide a professional and comfortable experience and pose and photograph your baby safely and with years of experience and education from some of the world’s best newborn photographers behind me. Book your 2022 session now and you won’t just lock in 2021 pricing, but you might be a part of a the big news I have coming early next year. Sweet little Weston visited my Devon home studio a couple weeks ago along with this drop dead gorgeous family. I have never had a more wonderful time capturing a family so full of love for one another. Mom and dad so smitten with each other and their boys, and brothers so enamoured with their new baby brother. Weston, a special Rainbow Baby, was an absolute angel for me and we were able to capture so many sweet shots. His beautiful mom gave me the greatest compliment during our session and it was about how safe she felt with me posing her baby. When you book a newborn photographer I understand that usually cost is the first thing you see - but please don’t be afraid to ask any potential newborn photographer how much experience they have with newborns and also how much safety training they have received. Safety is absolutely my number one priority when photographing your baby, and I am aways investing in more and more education to make sure I always capture beautiful posed images of baby safely. You will see a photo below of tiny little Weston in a basket - he was never left unattended in that basket - during poses like this mom or dad are always right next to baby and resting a hand on them when I am not shooting. Safety always come first. Danielle and Brandon, thank you so much for trusting me with these photos of your precious boy. Wishing you all the best as a family of five. Enjoy.

Edmonton & Area Newborn Photographer {Baby Oliver} Studio Session Sneak Peek

Such a beautiful day today, taking advantage of the weather and heading out with my husband to hit up a patio later tonight, something we don't often find the time for with three kids that keep up busy. This is such a beautiful time of year and really a great time for family photos. Golden hour is the most beautiful time of day for photos, but the summer months make it difficult for families with younger children who can't stay up until 10pm for photos. In spring though a 7:45pm session has gorgeous light and doesn't push bed time too late for little ones. I have a few last minute openings in May if you want to take advantage of the early sunsets for your family photos. Spring mini sessions are now booking too, visit link below for more info and to book.

I was so lucky to meet little Oliver when he was just hours old for his Fresh 48 session earlier this month; it was such an honour to capture such a fleeting and special time for one of my dear friends, witnessing new parents just look at their brand new baby with so much awe and love is so beautiful to me and always brings me back to those days with my girls.  When he was 12 days old it was time for his newborn session which we did in my Devon home studio. He definitely wasn't a fan of being undressed, but once I got him swaddled up he slept like a dream. Trinity and Hugh, thank you so much for choosing me to photograph your beautiful baby boy, it was so wonderful seeing you both. Wishing you all the best on the amazing adventure of parenthood. Enjoy. {K}
